Benzoyl peroxide is primarily an antibacterial agent. Its main effect on the skin is to introduce oxygen to the clogged parts of the skin’s pores. The more oxygen, the more fatal the environment is for the anaerobic bacteria. Benzoyl peroxide is capable of wiping out acne-causing organisms, such as P. acnes.
Salicylic acid is an exfoliant or an agent that peels off dead skin cells by loosening the binding substance that make the surface skin cells stick together. It combines well with oil and can penetrate deep inside clogged up pores. By doing this, salicylic acid helps hasten the growth of new skin cells, keeps the pores clear and prevents future acne outbreaks.
Retinols and alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s) are chemicals that are under constant fire regarding their capabilities to treat acne. Retinols are standalone components which can be used in combination with alpha hydroxy acids (AHA’s). Retinol and AHA’s are two different substances but they are used for the same cosmetic purpose – to peel off old skin and encourage the growth of new skin.
Topical retinoids are hailed by many skin specialists as one of the prominent foundation of acne treatment. They are usually the first line of defense prescribed against acne and also recommended as long-term medical care for virtually all acne sufferers. Topical retinoids are preferred by people who suffer comedonal acne, which involves blackheads and whiteheads.
The two most frequently used topical antibiotics for the fast treatment and maintenance of acne are clindamycin and erythromycin. They can be used singly or can be combined with benzoyl peroxide. They also work well with oral antibiotics to fight inflammatory acne, whiteheads, blackheads, as well as other non-acne skin problems.
Azelaic acid belongs to a class of chemicals called dicarboxylic acids. It is considered the second line of defense, used as alternatives for retinoids, benzoyl peroxide and other antibiotic formulations, usually in cases where they are not tolerated or are ineffective. Azelaic acid is effective against mild to moderate acne and is used to get rid of the lumpy protuberances, redness and lesions brought about by rosacea, a skin disorder characterized by bumps, flushing, redness and large pimples on the face.
Minocycline is an oral tetracycline antibiotic that helps in reducing severe acne by an average of about 60 percent. Besides acne, Minocycline is used in the treatment of various bacterial infections such as respiratory infections, amoebiasis, cholera, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, syphilis, urethritis, and others.
A tetracycline that might be worth looking at as a potentially effective oral antibiotic treatment for acne is doxycycline. Doxycycline is used in the treatment of inflammatory acne as well as other bacterial infections, which includes respiratory tract infections like pneumonia, dermatological and genito-urinary infections, anthrax exposure, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, cholera, brucellosis, and syphilis.
When topical and oral antibiotics fail to measure up against acne, using oral contraceptives or birth control pills can inhibit androgens from performing their tasks. Certain oral contraceptives prevent the release of sebum that fires up your acne by blocking the androgens that stimulate the oil glands. An antiandrogen is taken in combination with birth control pills in the event that the pill can’t handle the acne by itself, or if you have male symptoms like extra body hair or thinning scalp due to excess androgens.
Androgens are hormones that are considered to be the primary cause of acne development as they stimulate the sebaceous glands which in turn produce excess amounts of oil. For acne treatment to be effective, it is paramount to decrease the action of androgens. One of the most common methods employed is the use of antiandrogens, drugs that stop the action of androgens on oil glands.
Isotretinoin, more popularly recognized through its brand name, Accutane, is a potent oral medication used in the treatment of severe acne that is resistant to conventional methods such as topical or oral antibiotics and creams. An overwhelming number of patients reported dramatic decrease in acne symptoms and a prolonged drug-free improvement in just 15 to 20-week isotretinoin course.
PDT or photodynamic therapy is the use of a chemical solution and a source of light to kill off the bacteria responsible for the painful lesions of acne. PDT uses a photosensitizing agent that requires a specific form of light. The combination of these two components gave rise to the term PDT. In the United States, visible blue light is used to treat inflammatory acne.
The ancient art of Ayurveda has been practiced in India for many centuries and is presently gaining foothold in the West. Ayurvedic medicine says that all diseases stem from improper organ imbalances and poor diet. The proper diet using natural herbs can decrease the rigors of acne and block further breakouts. Acne is no different from the other afflictions of the human body. As such, it must be caused by imbalances inside the body.
The tetracycline group is the powerhouse in oral acne treatment. They are the leader of the proverbial pack as far as moderate to severe acne management is concerned. The various tetracycline formulations deter the development of P. acnes by heading straight to the sebaceous glands to disable the acne-causing bacteria. Tetracyclines work through bacteriostasis, preventing the spread and growth of bacteria. They have anti-inflammatory properties the drastically reduce the size of papules & pustules in patients.
Dermabrasion is a simple non-invasive surgical procedure involving the physical removal of the epidermis and dermis of your skin with the use of a high-speed motor-driven brush or fraise, pretty much similar to sanding. It removes superficial skin to allow healthier new skin to come out, resulting in tighter and smoother skin. It is also intended to remove small acne scars, fine wrinkles, or moles.
For more than fifty years, sulfur has been combined with other drugs such as salicylic acid, resorcinol and sodium sulfacetamide to prevent acne development. Sulfur is available almost everywhere in prescription medications and over-the-counter in the form of skin care products like ointments, creams, lotions, masks and soap.
Chemical peels were first introduced as anti-aging and facial exfoliation preparations but over time they came to be marketed as acne treatments as well. In a chemical peel, an acid mask is applied over your face which, upon drying, causes the skin to slough off and new skin to be exposed. Some of the brands have exotic names, out-of this-world price tags and are guilty of exaggerated claims. In truth, a lot of them are just sensationalized versions of the basic peels described here.
Hormonal therapy is the process of reversing the excessive production of male hormones in the body. Hormonal therapy is used to treat hormone-related problems, including acne and hair loss. Hormonal therapy involves the daily administration of antiandrogen drugs to control the freely flowing androgens in a person’s body.
Homeopathy is an old proto-medical approach to the treatment of disease. The base principle of homeopathy is this: if a substance can cause adverse illness in a robust person, the same substance is capable of treating an ill person if administered properly. For example, if Substance A can produce chicken pox-like symptoms in a healthy person, then it can be used to treat a person with real chicken pox.
How old is traditional Chinese medicine? It’s very old, about 4000 years old. It’s still growing and it’s still being developed. One of the basic principles of traditional Chinese medicine is that there must be balance between the opposing forces of life itself: the Yin and the Yang.
