BAKING SODA ACNE TREATMENT

Baking soda has been a favorite household product for years. From the kitchen pantry to the medicine cabinet, there are many helpful uses for baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate. Those who struggle with problem skin can follow these simple steps to make a homemade baking soda acne treatment that is both safe and effective.

Step 1

Use a mild, preferably natural soap to wash the affected area. With a clean cloth, wash the area with warm, soapy water, gently massaging the skin using a circular motion. Be careful to not scrub the skin too harshly. Washing too vigorously can create further irritation. Rinse with water and pat the skin lightly to dry with a clean towel.

Step 2

To make the baking soda acne treatment, put a small amount of baking soda in a clean bowl. Generally, 1 or 2 teaspoons will do. Add just a drop or two of clean water to make a paste just slightly thinner than toothpaste. Add more baking soda or water as necessary to get the right consistency. It should be easy to apply to the face using the fingertips.

Step 3

Apply the acne treatment mixture to the affected area by gently massaging the skin for a few seconds. This will help to exfoliate the skin. Leave the paste on the skin for about 10 minutes. Be careful not to leave the mixture on too long as this can dry out the skin and cause inflammation. Sensitive skin types may choose to leave the baking soda paste on for less time.

Step 4

Rinse the face thoroughly with clean, warm water and pat dry once again with a towel. A natural moisturizer can then be applied if desired, which can be particularly important if the skin type is naturally dry. Be sure to pay attention to any presenting redness or irritation to determine if the treatment itself seems appropriate for the individual skin care needs.

Results

Improvements can generally be noticed within a week, with the acne treatment preferably being done daily or at least every other day. Not only does the baking soda acne treatment help with current pimples, but it can prevent future breakouts from occurring. Baking soda is also noted to help eliminate scarring from previous blemishes.

Considerations

Some people may experience too much dryness with the treatment or find that it does not correct certain acne problems. It can be a good idea to try the treatment on one area or blemish in particular to watch for any developing irritation. After 24 hours, if there is no associated redness or irritation, applying the treatment to all affected areas seems reasonable.

Like anything else, baking soda may not yield positive outcomes for everyone. However, baking soda is a cheap remedy and likely a relatively effective choice in treating acne flare-ups and preventing future blemishes. It is also a healthy alternative to acne medications and chemical facial treatments that can be detrimental to the overall health of the skin and body.
