Top 5 Treatments
Hormonal acne is a type of acne caused by a hormonal imbalance, usually in the years when puberty hits, but not exclusively. In fact, many women deal with this type of acne throughout their lives. Usually, hormonal acne is a result of overactive oil glands which produce too much oil that ends up blocking pores and causing acne. There are many different types of acne treatment for hormonal acne.
Topical Acne Treatments
For a large percentage of individuals who suffer from hormonal acne, topical treatments can help. Most types of topical acne treatment contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Salicylic acid removes dead skin cells on the face, keeping the pores unclogged and allowing the skin’s natural oils to pass through without being blocked. Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial which helps kill bacteria present in the pores, which reduces or eliminates acne. The types of side effects include mild issues like redness or peeling skin.
As the oil becomes blocked inside the pores, bacteria can grow inside that oil. This then causes the pore to become swollen and infected, creating acne. Individuals can take antibiotics to kill the bacteria inside the pores, resulting in the reduction of acne. Because antibiotics cannot be taken constantly, this is a short-term fix that can clear the skin and allow individuals to find a more long-term treatment for their hormonal acne.
Birth Control Pills
For many women, taking birth control pills can dramatically decrease acne. The birth control pills, especially low-estrogen pills like Ortho Tri-Cyclen, help to balance the hormones in the body and prevent acne. This is perhaps one of the easiest types of hormonal acne treatment available. Some individuals may not be able to utilize this type of treatment, such as women who are attempting to become pregnant or those who are already pregnant.
Probiotics are a type of beneficial bacteria that can help balance out the body and keep bad bacteria in check. If the bad bacteria grow stronger in the intestines, it can affect the entire body and sometimes can cause acne. Probiotics can keep the bad bacteria in check so that there is less of a chance of the trapped oil growing bacteria and the skin becoming infected.
Checking for Underlying Conditions
Many individuals with hormonal problems, such as hypo- or hyperthyroidism can experience acne due to an imbalance of hormones in the body. Typically, when there is an underlying condition and it’s treated, the symptoms such as hormonal acne will clear up. Although this is not an actual acne treatment, it is valid in situations when the acne is caused by a primary health condition.
Hormonal acne can be embarrassing and frustrating, especially for grown men and women who feel as though they should be long past suffering from acne. These treatments can help reduce or eliminate the acne and make the skin smoother and clearer. In some cases, it may be necessary to try a few different treatments before finding one that really works for the specific individual.
