LASER ACNE TREATMENT

Most people will experience acne at some point in their lives. Many times, an over-the-counter acne treatment will suffice, but some acne is more stubborn and requires a more in-depth treatment. In addition to that, acne can leave scars that can range from simply embarrassing to disfiguring. Laser acne treatment can be a huge benefit to those suffering from acne and related scars.

Microdermabrasion Acne Treatment

Microdermabrasion is a type of laser acne treatment that can also be used for other skin conditions. This treatment is best for acne that has caused scarring. During treatment, the laser carefully removes layers of skin, which helps to remove acne scars as well as other flaws. This is essentially a painless treatment, but it is best for mild scarring. It will typically take a series of microdermabrasion treatments to remove the scarring—between 3 and 5 for most people. Patients may experience mild side effects at the treatment site.

Photo Rejuvenation

In another type of laser treatment called photo rejuvenation, doctors work not with a fine point but with a wider laser that can treat larger areas of the face at once. Rather than actually removing the acne and scars, this treatment stimulates the skin to produce more collagen which will help the body naturally heal the acne and scars. This is an ideal treatment for acne that exists in areas other than the face, such as the back or arms. This treatment will also require multiple trips to the dermatologist.

Pulsed-Dye Laser

The pulsed-dye laser is one that is often used for severe acne and scarring. This laser acne treatment actually removes areas of the skin that are damaged and then works to smooth the remaining skin. This treatment has been tested many times, and in one randomized, double-blinded controlled trial, the pulsed-dye laser was shown to significantly remove acne after one treatment and featured no serious side effects. In fact, it has been shown to remove acne by up to 83% after only three treatments. Mild side effects can include pain, redness and swelling.

Cost of Acne Laser Treatments

Acne treatment can start getting expensive when individuals seek out laser treatment, and the cost will depend on the type of laser treatment individuals opt for. However, the average cost is around $600 to $800 per session. Most individuals will need between 3 and 5 sessions to achieve the results they want, so the overall cost will be anywhere from $1,800 to $4,000. Many types of insurance do not cover laser treatments, as they are considered a cosmetic procedure; however, if a doctor states that the treatment is necessary, the patient’s insurance company may end up paying for the procedures.

Laser acne treatment is the strongest form of acne treatment available. It usually works well for men and women who suffer from severe acne and scarring, and many feel that the relief they experience is worth the cost of the acne treatment. Some doctors may have financing or payment plans that can make the cost easier to handle.
