Top 5 Treatments
Lemon is a household item that has been known to be beneficial in numerous situations, including as a gentle and inexpensive acne treatment. Before trying more expensive treatments, individuals can attempt this helpful home remedy to determine whether it will reduce or eliminate their acne.
Why Does Lemon Work?
Lemon contains alpha-hydroxy acid as well as a lot of vitamin C. Alpha-hydroxy acid exfoliates the skin naturally, removing dead skin cells that can block pores. It also kills the bacteria inside the pores which cause acne. Vitamin C is a natural anti-inflammatory, which can reduce swelling and help encourage the acne on the face or other areas to heal. Experts also believe lemon increases the skin’s natural elasticity and helps new skin cells to grow, which will result in clearer, healthier looking skin.
How to Use the Lemon Acne Treatment
Using lemon to treat your acne is extremely easy. You can use either bottled lemon juice or fresh squeeze your lemon juice. The process is easy and fast:
• Wash your face with a mild and gentle soap and then pat dry.
• Dip a cotton swab into the lemon juice and gently squeeze out the excess so it is not dripping.
• Swipe the cotton swab over the entire face, avoiding the areas near the eyes. You may feel a burning or stinging as you rub the lemon juice on. That is normal and will disappear quickly.
• Allow the lemon juice to remain on the skin for 10 minutes and then rinse off with warm water before patting dry.
You can do this twice a day, both morning and night, if you have severe acne. You can also keep the lemon juice on your face overnight, but you will want to gently wash your face in the morning before applying a moisturizer.
Side Effects of Lemon Juice as an Acne Treatment
There are no serious side effects of using the lemon acne treatment. However, individuals may experience a slight redness in the area the lemon juice was used on. You may also experience tingling and dry skin. If you do notice overly dry skin and are using the lemon juice twice a day, step it down to once a day. Make sure you are using a good quality non-oily facial moisturizer after using the lemon juice treatment.
Lemon Juice as a Preventative
Once you have cleared your face of the acne, you can continue using lemon juice on your face as a preventative. It will prevent the growth of bacteria in the pores of your face, therefore preventing additional acne from popping up. If you are using lemon juice as a preventative, use it just once a day.
Lemon juice can be very beneficial for the skin and may even lighten freckles or dark spots. It is also thought to have anti-aging properties, which can make skin appear more youthful. Take care when using lemon juice so you do not get it in your eyes. If you do, flush thoroughly with water for 15 minutes.
