Top 5 Treatments
If you have particularly bad acne that will not clear up with traditional over-the-counter treatments, you should speak with your doctor about the possibility of a Retin-A acne treatment prescription. Retin-A is a powerful medication that works to open up your pores and dry pimples so they disappear more quickly. Steps to using this medication are outlined below.
Acquire a Prescription
You need to consult your doctor before beginning a Retin-A acne treatment. This is important not only because the medication requires a prescription, but also because your doctor will give you usage instructions that include how often you should apply the medicine. Be sure to take careful note of what your doctor says, as using the product against medical instructions can lead to skin damage.
Wash your Face
Before applying the acne treatment, make sure you wash your face thoroughly. Use a non-alcohol based cleaner during the wash to make sure your skin does not get too dried out. Also be sure that your cleaner is a mild one and not something that might be overly harsh on your skin. If you will be applying the Retin-A using your finger, be sure that your hands are also clean.
With a clean finger or a cotton swab, apply your Retin-A carefully to your acne. This medication is high in vitamin A and vitamin E, both of which help promote skin health and overall wellness. It will open up your pores and smooth out damage to your skin. As such, if your doctor agrees, this treatment can also be used to smooth out worry lines and other skin damage. It is not intended strictly as an anti-aging cream, and should only be used as such in conjunction with its intended use as an acne cream. After application, avoid high sodium foods or facial washes with alcohol in them as they will dry your skin out too much, possibly leading to long-term damage.
Warnings and Side Effects
There are a few things you should take into consideration before using this acne treatment. The medication renders skin more vulnerable to sun exposure. Thus, after you have applied it, you should not spend too much time outdoors in harsh sunlight. In most cases, wearing a wide-brimmed hat will be enough to protect your skin from further damage. If you have developed a sunburn in an affected area, using Retin-A may cause a slight stinging sensation upon application. In this case, apply a little bit of aloe vera after you have given the medication a chance to work. This will mitigate some of the skin damage and hopefully help both your acne and your burn.
Retin-A is a very effective treatment that should have your skin looking much better in a matter of days. Because it is a powerful way to deal with acne, you should not use if for more than one month continuously unless instructed by a doctor. In most cases, your skin problems will have completely cleared up within two weeks.
